Pell Grants usually are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor&#8217;s or a professional degree.\u00a0These grants are low interest loans that do\u00a0not need be paid back if the student graduates. For the 2016\u201317\u00a0award year, the maximum award is $5,815.\u00a0The amount you get, though, will depend on your <cite title=\"The difference between the cost of attendance (COA) at a school and your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). While COA varies from school to school, your EFC does not change based on the school you attend.\u00a0\">financial need<\/cite>, your cost of attendance, your status as a full-time or part-time student, and your plans to attend school for a full <cite title=\"This is the amount of the academic work you must complete each year, and the time period in which you are expected to complete it, as defined by your school. For example, your school\u2019s academic year may be made up of a fall and spring semester, during which a full-time undergraduate student is expected to complete at least 24 semester hours\u00a0(usually called credits or credit hours)\u00a0over the course of 30 weeks of instructional time. Academic years change from school to school and even from educational program to educational program at the same school.For purposes of the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, an academic year is defined as one complete school year at the same school, or two complete and consecutive half years at different schools, or two complete and consecutive half years from different school years (at either the same school or different schools). Half years exclude summer sessions and generally fall within a 12-month period. For schools that have a year-round program of instruction, nine months is considered an academic year.\">academic year<\/cite> or less.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Direct Loan<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"tab\">Subsidized and unsubsidized loans are federal student loans for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education and are directly from the U.S Department of Education. They must be repaid. The U.S. Department of Education offers eligible students at participating schools Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Direct Subsidized Loans<\/strong><\/span> are loans for eligible undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need and are based on their financial need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\"><strong>For Direct Subsidized Loans, the U.S Department of Education pays the interest:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While you are in school at least part time<br \/>\nFor the first 6 months after you leave school<br \/>\nDuring deferment<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Direct Unsubsidized Loans<\/strong> <\/span>are loans made to eligible undergraduate but the student does not have to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for the loan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">For Undirect Subsidized Loans you are responsible for paying the interest. If you choose not to pay interest while in school, during grace persiods or during deferment, your interest will accumulate and will be added to the principle amount of your loan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Direct PLUS Loans<\/strong><\/span> are loans made to parents of dependent undergraduate students to help pay for education expenses not covered by other financial aid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">They are borrowed from the U.S Department of Education and the borrowed must not have an adverse credit history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Direct Consolidation Loans<\/strong><\/span> allow you to combine all of your eligible federal student loans into a single loan with a single loan servicer. The result is a single monthly payment instead of multiple payments.<\/p>\n<p>Loan consolidation can greatly simplify loan repayment by centralizing your loans to one bill and can lower monthly payments by giving you up to 30 years to repay your loans. You might also have access to alternative repayment plans you would not have had before, and you\u2019ll be able to switch your variable interest rate loans to a fixed interest rate.
