ADA/504 Rehabilitation Act

College students with disabilities are covered by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Title II protects students at state and federally-funded colleges, while Title III, which covers public accommodation, protects students at privately-funded schools. A major obstacle that all students must overcome is the expense of obtaining a degree, a challenge that can be especially difficult for those with disabilities. Leon Studio One School of Beauty Knowledge (LSO) understands that students with disabilities may face unique challenges or circumstances while pursuing a college education. Fortunately, there is financial aid for students with physical disabilities, cognitive and learning disabilities, or neurological disabilities. You may need proof of disability from a medical professional, the Social Security Administration, or the Department of Veterans Affairs to qualify.

Accessible Facilities and Architecture

LSO ensures that our building, classrooms, and facilities are accessible to individuals with disabilities. We follow ADA architectural standards to make sure our spaces are accessible to persons with disabilities. However, private schools such as LSO are allowed to only fix barriers if they are easily achievable without much burden toward expenses. This means we are not held to the same standards as public universities.

Aids and Services

LSO will provide necessary aids and services to ensure effective support, communication, and access for students with disabilities. This might include sign language interpreters, assistive technologies, note-taking assistance, counseling services, braille services, accessible materials, or other accommodations to help students with disabilities participate fully and equitably. Students are also allowed to bring their own emotional and/or service support animals to support them through college.

  • Students with disabilities can access federal aid like Pell Grants by filing the FAFSA, which does not affect SSDI or SSI benefits.
  • SSDI and SSI provide monthly benefits, and Vocational Rehabilitation benefits can cover the cost of education, training, and assistive technology.

Academic Policy Adjustments

Leon Studio One will make reasonable academic adjustments and policy modifications to ensure that students with disabilities have equal opportunities. This might involve extended time for exams, modified attendance policies, course delivery formats, alternative testing arrangements, and more. Non-discrimination
LSO does not discriminate against students with disabilities in any aspect of education and college life. They must provide equal opportunities and a level playing field by ensuring fair treatment in admissions, programs, and services.
